It is the mountain of the Seven Colors, also known as Vinicunca or Arcoíris. The mountain is located in the Cordillera del Vilcanota at 5020 meters above sea level, in the district of Pitumarca. Its slopes and peaks are tinged with stripes of intense shades of fuchsia, turquoise, lavender and gold, red, purple, green, pink and other variations. This tourist attraction was surrounded by ice not many years ago. Since 2016, this place receives hundreds of visitors a day, becoming, together with Machu Picchu, one of the most visited places in Cusco-Peru.
The excursion starts very early (5 am), we take south direction from Cusco in private land transport for 2 hours until Cusipata town, from this point the journey continues for one hour, along unpaved road to the town of Phulawasipata (15000, ft.). This is the place where our walk starts (The local community rent the horse service, being an interesting alternative). On the ascent you will begin to enjoy beautiful landscapes, accompanied by groups of llamas and alpacas. The highest snow-capped mountain in Cusco "Apu Ausangate" (21000, ft.) will show its impressive glacier, which will transform our walk into a magical experience. In the distance we will see the daily life of the local people also local fauna like; vizcachas, Andean geese, falcons like the caracara, will be part of our tour.
Walking for 2 hours. We will arrive at the main attraction “Vinicunca” (Rainbow Mountain is located at 16466 ft.). We recommend not to exceed 30 minutes of permanence in the mountain pass. Enough time to explore and take the best photos of the mountain.
Our return to Cusco is by the same route, in the way we have a stop in the town of Cusipata for lunch, then we continue to Cusco to arrive at 5 pm.
